Mealybugs are oval shaped, rather flat insects, covered with white waxy filaments.

On the outer edge of their body they carry several waxy filaments that are more pronounced than the ones on their back.

Some species produce an ovisac to deposit their eggs, others are viviparous.

Adult females are wingless and closely resemble the younger instars; males are hardly recognizable as mealybugs since they are winged, brown to grey in colour and very tiny.

All instars suck sap from the plants thus resulting in cosmetically damage but also in growth reduction and deformation of the leaves.

All mealybug species produce honeydew in which the black sooty mold fungus will start growing, turning infested plants black.

hosts: e.g. Croton, Ficus, Schefflera

Pseudococcus viburni (syn. P. affinis)

characteristics: tail filaments moderately long, but shorter than the body; no line lengthwise over their body, waxy filaments around the body rather short, body colour orange, eggs orange, deposited outside of the female's body in an ovisac

natural enemies: Pseudaphycus maculipennis, Leptomastix epona en Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

hosts: e.g. Passiflora, roses , tomatoes

Pseudococcus longispinus

characteristics: tail filaments long, longer than body length, waxy filaments around the body clearly visible, moderately long, older instars having a line lengthwise over their body, body colour grey, this species is viviparous, so no ovisac visible insect often hidden in white waxy mass

natural enemies: Anagyrus fusciventris, Anagyrus pseudococci, Gyranusoidea litura en Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

hosts: e.g. Cycas, orchids, palm trees

Spilococcus cactearum

characteristics: tail filaments same length as filaments around the body, no line lengthwise over their body, waxy filaments on the body rather thin, body colour grey occurs only on cactus
