Soft scales are small, sap-sucking insects causing cosmetically damage to plants. Infested plants are not growing well.

Most soft scales produce lots of honeydew, a sticky substance in which the sooty mould fungus is growing, turning the leaves of the plant black, preventing their photosynthetic activity.

Soft scales differ from armoured scales in having a protective covering, their scale cover which cannot be separated from their body without killing the insect. The scale cover of armoured scales can be separated from the insect's body without killing the insect.

Soft scales grow on leaves, petioles and stems. Small instars are brown-green/yellow coloured and most of the time rather difficult to see.

The bigger instars are more easy to recognize; they differ a lot in colour and shape, depending on the species.

soft scales

Coccus hesperidum (soft brown scale)

characteristics: flat, oval, yellow- brown coloured; somewhat transparent, older instars with a dorsal longitudinal ridge, mostly along the veins, very wide host-range, producing a lot of honeydew, resulting in the growth of sooty mould

natural enemies: Microterys nietneri and Metaphycus flavus

hosts: Anthurium, Asplenium, Ficus, roses, Schefflera

Saissetia coffeae (hemispherical scale)

characteristics: younger instars yellow- light brown in colour, somewhat transparent, adults bright to dark brown in colour, hemispherical shaped, with a smooth surface; a lot of eggs can be under the scale cover, mostly along veins, producing honeydew, resulting in the growth of sooty mould

natural enemies: Metaphycus flavus, Metaphycus helvolus, Coccophagus lycimnia en Metaphycus stanleyi

hosts: avocado, coffee, ferns, palms

Saissetia oleae (black scale)

hosts: Citrus, Oleander, Olijf
