Spider mites are by far the most common type of mites that occur in many crops and cause a lot of damage. It starts with small spots in the leaf but may eventually result in webbing in the tips of the plants containing many young and older spider mites. If there is already any visible damage, the products TETRIX and SPIDEX are the best choice. Both contain the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis specialized in clearing spider mites. To use SPIDEX requires high humidity, above 60%; for TETRIX a humidity of at least 40% is enough. SPICAL predatory mites can be used preventatively since they can survive for a while without sapwood but are less effective in cleaning an existing infestation.
Apart from spider mites also other mite species may occur, such as Citrus mite or broad mite. For control of those pests other species of predatory mite should be used: Amblyseius barkeri, Amblyseius swirskii (SWIRSKI MITE) and also Amblydromalus limonicus (LIMONICA).
The gall midge Feltiella acarisuga (SPIDEND) is especially at higher temperature and humidity a great biocontrol product of spider mites, especially when spider mites occur in hot spots. The gall midge will regularly move into a greenhouse if no chemical pesticides are used.
Amblyseius andersoni is the only predator species that is effective at lower temperature. This predatory mite is effective against different species of mites and is a good choice when used in an outdoor situation.
